Course Overview
Geometry is the study of measurements, the relationships between figures, and the development and use of a system of logic. Many of the applications combine geometric properties with algebraic skills. Level 4 Geometry is a course for students with high math ability, a strong sense of self-motivation, and the willingness to take risks. Students are expected to use independent thinking skills to identify and extend the basic concepts of geometry. Students will develop an organizational structure for the body of geometric facts and their applications through the use of a logical system.
Grading
Each marking period grade will be comprised of:
Tests: 40%
Quizzes: 30%
Homework: 15%
Classwork: 15%
Final grade will be determined by the following:
Each quarter grade: 20%
Mid-term exam: 10%
Final exam: 10%
Policies and Procedures
Students should refer to the Bobcat to ensure that they understand the academic integrity policy.
These rules are in place to ensure a safe, comfortable learning environment, where all students can be successful.
Always come to class prepared.
Students are expected to be in their seats after the second bell rings.
Be attentive and participate. Full effort is expected on a daily basis.
Respect yourself, others and personal/school property.
No put-downs to yourself or others.
No food or drinks are allowed in the classroom except clear water bottles.
Locker passes will not be issued and lav passes will be given for emergency situations only.
If a student chooses to break a rule, the following consequences will occur:
1st offense – verbal warning
2nd offense – teacher detention and parents notified
3rd offense or severe disruption – removal from class and office referral
Course Materials
Each day, students must bring:
Completed Homework (with Name, Date, Period, Assignment)
Covered Textbook
Pencils and erasers
Math 3-Ring Notebook
Calculator
Compass and Protractor
My Website
Please take a moment to bookmark my website. You can access my policies, as well as your current grades in my class. I update it at least once per week. Your password is the first three letters of my last name (gia) followed by your student number, without the first zero. Email is usually the best way to contact me.
Homework
Homework is assigned every class and is due at the beginning of the period. During in-class review of the homework, or after receiving the assignment back, students are expected to fix incorrect answers and use all resources available in order to ensure understanding of the material. Points are earned for completion, accuracy and neatness as follows:
100% (check plus) All problems complete; mostly or all accurate; all work clearly shown; neat with header
75% (check) All problems attempted; multiple errors indicating material may not be mastered; some work shown; may be messy
50% (check minus) Not all problems attempted; most answers incorrect or incomplete; little or no work shown; may be messy
25% (late) After 1 week, late work will no longer be accepted.
0% Assignment not handed in.
If a student has a verified absence from class, the assignment(s) must be turned in within five days of the absence to get full credit.
Tests and Quizzes
Quizzes will occur once or twice per chapter. Announced quizzes will be preceded by a brief review; pop quizzes will not. Daily review of material will prepare students for any unannounced quizzes, which generally cover single concepts, new terminology and/or vocabulary from the previous lesson. A test will be given at the end of each chapter and will be announced in advance, and there will usually be class time allotted for review. If a student misses a test/quiz because of an excused absence, he/she will need to arrange a time to make it up within five days, or it will be scored as a zero. If a student has been absent for an extended period of time, other arrangements can be made. Tests/quizzes missed due to an unexcused absence cannot be made up and will be counted as a zero. If a student is absent the day before a test or quiz and no new concepts were introduced, they are expected to take the test on the day of their return.
Absences
Students should refer to the Bobcat to ensure that they understand the policy for absences.
Attendance is essential to the learning process, especially given the structure of this course, including class discussions, collaborative work and the sequential nature of mathematics. Absences may affect student understanding of the material, subsequent future material dependent on these skills, and opportunities for participation. It is extremely important to be present in class in order to take full advantage of the class time and ensure success in this class.
Tardies
Students should refer to the Bobcat to ensure that they understand the policy for tardiness.
Tardy students will be admitted to class and an excused pass must be presented. If not, the tardy will counted as unexcused, the student will receive a grade of zero for any missed assignment, and no additional time will be given to make up class work, including tests and quizzes. Tardy students are expected to acquire missed information from a fellow classmate. Three unexcused tardies in a marking period will result in parent notification and detention. Excessive tardiness will be referred to Building Administration for further action.
Make-up Work
Students should refer to the Bobcat to ensure that they understand the policy for making up missed work.
A student who has been absent or dismissed is expected to make up all schoolwork. It is the responsibility of the student to find out what work was missed and to make any necessary arrangements. Students are expected to complete such work within five school days, or it will count as a zero. Students absent for an extended time should see the teacher if they require other arrangements for make-up work.
Note to parents
This is an exciting time of transition for your child, and I am pleased to help make it as enjoyable and successful as possible. I ask that you encourage your child to take responsibility for his/her own learning by asking questions in class, putting full effort into all assignments and maintaining a positive attitude. If additional help is needed, I am available during my office hours. If you have any questions or concerns at any time during the year, please do not hesitate to contact me.
Note to students
First and foremost, we must maintain a respectful, comfortable learning environment, to provide you (and your peers) opportunity for success. In addition, I remind you that it is your responsibility to ensure that you understand the material in this course. Put forth 100% effort and use the resources available to you, and you will be successful!
